Upcoming Workshop

Memory Capsule Workshop
hosted by Latitude Artist Community
Dec. 1, 1-2:30 pm
167 Saunier Street
Lexington, KY

*This event is free and open to the public.

I'm really excited to announce that I will be leading a memory capsule workshop at Latitude Artist Community.  At the workshop we will be creating memory capsules  for Preserved: A participatory installation. Each capsule is meant to represent someone, who though no longer part of capsule creator's life, was  influential in some way. To learn more about the memory capsules check out this post.

Jars will be provided. However, you are encouraged to bring materials representing the person you wish to memorialize. While we will provide materials for the workshop, they may not carry as much significance as materials you bring yourself (such as newspaper clippings, memorabilia, etc.).

How You Can Participate

Create a memory capsule within a canning jar that represents a person who, though no longer in your life, was influential to you in some way. The space within the jar is yours to use as you will. Don't have a jar? Don't worry. Just contact me at katmburke@gmail.com and I will get one to you.

Some ideas for what you can do:
  • Write a poem and place it in the jar
  • Fill the jar with mementos
  • Create a diorama within the jar
  • Place photos of the person in the jar
Please submit your capsule by December 15th to:
Kathleen Burke
c/o Transylvania University
300 N. Broadway
Lexington, KY 40508

All jars will be sealed and I promise not to disturb the contents of your jar before, during or after the sealing process. Please do not alter the jar so as to make it impossible to seal. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact me at katmburke@gmail.com

Installation Information

I'm currently working on a new installation to be exhibited in January 2012. It is an installation of preserved memory capsules. Each capsule is contained within a canning jar and represents a person who, though no longer in the jar creator's life, was influential to the jar's creator. The jars will be displayed in a variety of ways (hanging, stacking, window boxes, etc).

As of now, the show will be held from January 9-21 in the Shearer Student Gallery at Transylvania University. This is subject to change.
